What if before Harry met Sally, he had met Sean? Or if before chasing Amy, he was chasing Adam? And before kissing Jessica Stein, he was kissing Jacob Stein? That’s the premise of the new edgy romantic comedy, DETOUR – what happens to ANNIE & JAKE, when she learns a bit more about his sexual history than she had bargained for?

Jake is in love with Annie. Annie adores Jake. They have been happily married for three months.  But their romance is thwarted one night, when they take a risky plunge into revealing their deepest sexual secrets and desires.  Annie discovers that Jake’s past is dotted with a few more historical figures than she expected – namely those of the male persuasion.  Annie, an up-and-coming painter, is straight.  But what does this make Jake? Is he now gay? Is he now bisexual? Is he still straight, but has just experimented? Which box does he fit in? And that’s just it – Jake fits in his own box.  His sexuality, like all human beings, is as unique as his thumbprint.  For Jake, a holistic landscape artist, this is something old – but the painful reminders of the shame that it brings up for him are more than he can handle.  Why is there a double standard – a woman can have sex with another woman, and return to men, and no one really questions it – but a guy can’t do the same thing?   The point is that he loves Annie – period.

For Annie – she has trouble processing this newfound information, and when she starts to become suspicious of one of his male friends, TAYLOR, it sends her into a downward spiral where trust, love, and the very foundation of their relationship are called into question.  With the help of her wisecracking friend, CAMI, she concocts a plan to get Jake to confess what she thinks is the truth – only to have it backfire when she gets caught in a lie.  Jake retreats to the wisdom of his pot-smoking mother, GABRIELLA, while Annie delves into her art to work through her pain, with the help of her business partner and confidant, MARESA.  In the end, thanks to a plot concocted by Cami and SHELLY, Cami’s salt-of-the earth mother, and MIKE and NICK, a gay couple romantic enough to help two random strangers get back together, Annie and Jake are sent on a path of reconciliation – but is it too late – has the foundation of their marriage crumbled?  Or will love and the real acceptance of each other as modern married partners triumph?

DETOUR is a unique insight into the contemporary relationship with a point of view that’s just not discussed – what happens to the traditional married couple when the roles are reversed?  Can the female be aggressive and accelerated, and the male be vulnerable and emotional without throwing their world into upheaval?  It is one couple’s journey, as they break the norms of how a relationship is “supposed to be”, while discovering their true selves and experiencing whether this new dynamic for marriage can actually work.

DETOUR – sex you can’t put into a box.
